3 Steps to Stress-Free Spring Break Travel with Your Pet

Few things are better than getting away during Spring Break and taking a relaxing vacation, especially if your furry friend tags along. However, before heading out on an adventure with your pet, ensure you’re prepared for safe travels.

#1: Follow rules and regulations

Whether you’re traveling by plane, train, or automobile, understand the stipulations that may be in place. Airlines may not allow pets to fly if the temperature at your departure or arrival location is too cold or too hot to ensure their safety. Breed restrictions also may apply. If you’re traveling out of the country, see what health certificate requirements and vaccinations are necessary to allow your pet into the country. Or, if you’re taking a road trip with your pet, check to see whether pets are allowed at hotels along the way and at your final destination.

#2: Microchip your pet

If you have not already microchipped your pet, there is no better time to do so than before a trip. This permanent identification form cannot be removed or lost, making it the best way to guarantee a happy reunion if your pet becomes lost while traveling. If your pet’s microchipped, verify that your contact information is up to date with the microchip registration company.

#3: Visit your veterinarian before traveling

Before traveling, visit your veterinarian to ensure your pet is healthy and current on necessary vaccinations. Depending on where you go, additional pet vaccinations may be required. If you’re flying or crossing borders, you likely will need a valid, current health certificate for your pet, which only your veterinarian can complete. Airlines and other countries have different regulations regarding pet travel, so check the requirements to ensure your four-legged companion can make the journey with you.
